| In the winter of 1926 a child was born who would become the darkest wizard of the 20th century. You could argue it was his "nature" to be evil, or that it was the way he was "nurtured" that gave rise to his cruelty amd domineering ways. Maybe it was a combination of the two. Whichever and whatever made him the way he was, by 1938 when Albus Dumbledore came to speak with the child, it was already too late.
In 1943 while delving into research the wizard came upon the term Horcrux. Provided with information the beginnings of a plot began to formulate. Having learned of his heritage, he went to "meet" them. His muggle family fell victim to him first whereupon he made his first Horcrux. His second was made when he confronted his mother's family and took the Peverell ring. Before he left Hogwarts in 1945 he had already had the name Voldemort as well as 3/4ths of his soul removed.
Within the next span of years saw 1/64th of Voldemort's soul sustaining the wizard. Resulting to dark magic and rituals that stripped the rest of the man's sanity and better judgement, Voldemort sought everlasting life and dominance. His once admirable goals had been twisted until even he believed the warped propoganda and the lies. Those with their own agendas joined his ranks as would be shown after his supposed downfall and "death". They perpetuated those wrong notions about Voldemort's campaign.
Some of his more devout followers became his "inner circle". Those that he trusted as much as he could trust someone. To two of these people he entrusted with two of his soul pieces. It would be thanks to one of these that he would be able regain a body much earlier then would have happened. It is also the reason why the follower who so foolishly discarded the Horcrux woyld be shown leniency.
Some of those that joined his ranks were weak beings, selling out their fellows at the first whiff of trouble. Some were like the rat animagus Pettigrew who dreamed that taking the mark would grant him Voldemort's protection, a reputation, and some respect. Unknowing that respect was to be given to the Dark Lord amd not received without due course. It was therefore not unexpected that at the first opportunity to "prove himself" to his lord and gain his fellows respect, Pettigrew brought his master the information he needed in 1981 concerning a certain family.

| In the summer of 1979 Albus Dumbledore the current headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry held an interview in the Hog's Head Tavern in Hogsmeade. It was one of the many mistakes to come on behalf of Dumbledore's plans. Who's to say what was on the old warlock's mind when he requested to meet in such a shady place. It could have ben he hadn't realized that it just being owned by his brother guarenteed no eavesdroppers nor that its patrons would have other things on their minds and ignore an interview going on. The damage was done when during said interview the professor to be spoke a phrophecy.
This was not something that the old wizard had expected. Unknown to them for a time there was a interloper listening at the door. The listener heard the first part of the ominous prophecy regarding his master. Depending on the view point it was perhaps both fortunate and/or unfortunate that the prophecy hadn't been heard in full. Discovered and removed before he could hear the rest, Severus Snape gave what he had heard to the Dark Lord.
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies" That was the only part of the prophecy that Voldemort had to go on. If he had had the rest of the prophecy he might have been more cautious when approaching how to rid himself of that which threatened him and his plans for the wizarding world. Over the course of the summer it was clear through the reports from his spies that only two children were qualified to fulfil the prophecy. Two families that were associated with the Order of the Pheonix were expecting heirs to be born.
Upon finding out that one of those families was the Potters had Severus Snape asking a favour of his master. The man on a whim had agreed to spare the mudblood woman for his loyal follower that had brought his attention to the danger the Potter scion possessed. Learning that Voldemort had chosen the Potters and not the Longbottoms, Snape did something that would forever echo through his life. He went to Dumbledore who guarenteed that he would see to the Potters' safety. That 'safety' was talking the Potters into using a Fidellius to hide their family. Something James Potter only agreed to for his wife and son.

| The Longbottom and Potter families went into hiding, but only one had a traitor amongst them. Having suspected that someone close was not who they said, James agreed with Sirius to use Peter as the Secret Keeper. Not wanting to doubt Remus but unwilling to risk his family the switch was made. When he could deliver the Potters, the traitor divulged the whereabouts of the Potters. That action sealed his death moments after the death of those that had considered him family.
Because the man who became a dual spy was convinced the focus of the attack would be the Potters, more protection was not placed on the Longbottoms. They were not urged or convinced to hide under the fidelius. Thus it left them open to attack when they believed the danger had passed. It would bring speculation and for the Longbottom scion many trials and tribulations.
Deciding to use the date when the magic was supposed to be strongest, Voldemort attacked. Believing that everything was on his side, knowing he could not lose gave made him overconfident. Gaining entry to the Potter home in Godric's Hollow had been easy as was the resulting death of James Potter. A quick Avada Kadavra and you had a dead former enemy. When the witch that was in his way that Voldemort had agreed to spare his loyal follower, Lucius Malfoy intervened and killed the mudblood.
This is where Voldemort miscalculated. He brought with him both the traitor and the one entrusted with his first Horcrux. The first twist of fate that changed the wizarding world and would cause a ripple effect. Lily Potter died pleading for them to spare Harry, and Lucius had coldly agreed and killed her. When his master had then sent the killing curse at the toddler it did two things. It killed the boy but it also lashed out because the promise from a wizard was like a magical contract. It had been violated and the repercussion for doing so went into effect.
The backlash of magic tore through the dark wizard ripping his fragmented soul and destroying his body. Having been the closer of the two to the blast radius, Voldemort had gotten the full fury while Lucius had been reduced unconscious where he was thrown. Pettigrew not wanting to witness the deaths of Lily Potter and her son had remained downstairs gazing at a dead James whose eyes while dead still seem to hold a look of betrayal. The house was destroyed with an "incinerated" dark lord, an injured Death Eater, and a cowardly rat who fled scene at the first sound of trouble. |

| The resounding noise from the explosion as well as the shockwaves had been heard and felt throughout the village. Lucius knowing he had but minutes had grabbed his master's wand and disapperated away despite the greater chance of splinching himself while trying to do so with a concussion and dazed. He was a Slytherin and they were about saving their own skins. When he got home he hid his master's wand away with the diary that had been given into his care. The cunning man would wait to see what news the morrow brought to act accordingly. Knowing that his wife would prove his alibi so as not to deprive their young son a father nor bring them shame.
The infamous Sirius Black was about to become famous though he didn't know it. He would also doom himself in his fury and grief driven desire for revenge. Upon seeing the ruins of the home that had become his best friend's grave, the Black heir had taken off after Pettigrew knowing that he was the only one that could have caused this. The only one who would have sold James and Lily out. Something in him told him that the rat had no nees to be tortured to have spilled his guts to Voldemort. Confronting and cornimg the rat on a muggle street corner Sirius lunged angrily already shifting into his dog form when the coward started shouting out his lies. Peter died as the rat he was trying to escape his once friend who tore him to pieces. The Aurors found him bloody with a bit of a mad grin and admitting with self-loathing to the deaths of the Potters.
With the confession and memories pulled from the muggle witnesses before Obliviating them, Sirius was immediately sentenced to Azkaban. During the next few weeks and months marshal law was in effect. Many criminals were tried and sentenced to Azkaban. Anyone bearing the brand of Voldemort was imprisoned whether they were newly minted or swimming in bodies and blood to their necks. It was a chaotic time with those older families associated with 'dark' side of magic to prove their innocence.
Many walked free with it being almost impossible to tell if someone had really been Imperioused or willfully participated. Lucius Malfoy was one of these that was able to slither his way out of the charges. The brands on the Death Eaters faded after a day or so of their lord vanishing. Some were not happy and would not believe what was becoming known as the common truth. Once such person was none other than the insane Bellatrix Lestrange. The woman who loved Voldemort and had been entrusted with the only other Horcrux that was not safely hidden away.
Bellatrix with her husband, brother-in-law, and a newly minted Death Eater had gone to the Longbottoms who had believed they were safe. They were the only other family that their lord had mentioned that he might possibly pay a visit to and end their lineage. The witch made no secret her desire upon Voldemort nor that she was going to try and get answers from the Longbottoms. The group tortured the couple repeatedly and frequently. Caught up in the act that they were caught at the scene by Aurors who had been alerted by the Longbottom Matriarch who had come to visit her grandson. While Bella stood proud and boasted of the deed Barty Crouch Jr had panicked and declared his innocence to no avail. |

| Within a few days everyone in the wizarding world had heard the news. He-who-must-not-be-named was no more. He had met his end in Godric's Hallow. Somehow the Potters had been able to defeat him before they died. It was assumed they died in the magical explosion. In their joy to be rid of the dark plague upon their society, they ignored the rules about being covert and subtle. They were very obvious, broke the statute of secrecy, and endangered the wizarding world of being discovered.
Along with the joy was the gried to those that they had lost on the struggle first with Grindelwald then his successor, Voldemort. It wasn't long though before the wizards stopped toasting and remembering to feel sadness and thanks for the Potters' and the many other sacrifices. They began to go about their days and grew complacent. Forgetting everything that they had gone through to be able to go to bed without fear of tbeir families being torn usunder. They grew lazy and acted as if it had all just been a fanciful frightful tale.
All the while Voldemort's shade had latched onto a snake. The only creature he deemed worthy to possess. The bodies didn't last long but they lasted long enough to get him around Britain. To hear the lies of his demise. Of the betrayals to him by his so called 'devoted' followers. Oh, he heard it all. And the anger drove him along with his self-preservation instinct. He would bide his time amd when he returned they would all pay.
Severus Snape having 'proved' his loyalty to Dumbledore was given a teaching position as the Potions Professor. The Slytherin likely thought it was a way to keep an eye on him as well as reward him since not many people could be called a 'Master Potioneer' even if they mastered in potions. Lucius Malfoy climbed the political ladder at work and made sure not to rise any suspicions about himself. Many tended to believe the story that he was Imperioused. The Malfoys were known to be vain and no one could say that Lucius would voluntarily go or do anything that would mar him.
Neville Longbottom was given into the care of his father's mother. His parents were now permanant reaidents of St.Mungos. He was kept an eye on by Dumbledore. While to all intents and purposes the phrophecy was null and void now, the warlock had his suspicions. Not all prophecies came true. Some became self-fulfiling prophecies, but more often then not, they became void. Something would happen so events changed. Important events never came to pass or never were or could be interpreted hundreds of small ways. Outside influences, or trying to force an issue. |

| The years were quiet and peaceful with no dark lord, no Death Eaters causing panic, murder, and riots. A whole decade and there hadn't been a re-emergence of any life threatening situations outside the norm. Children still went to Hohwarts, received their invitations, did their shopping in Diagon Alley, and people still jockeyed for power, prestige, and polotics. There was still the bigotry even if it had been dulled down somewhat. There were also still blood fueds and those who would an enmity over constantly clashing at school or work.
Arthur Weasley and Lucius Malfoy continually butted heads at work. Lucius disliked the muggle loving wizard. Arthur dislike the Slytherin's views on muggles and his blood supremecy idiology. Arthur continued to put forth bills to protect muggles and veto bills that would endanger them. Lucius was just the opposite which would irritate the both and cause Lucius to snipe and make disdainful remarks about the man's almost poverty level finances. It was a testament to Arthur Weasley's character he never sank as low as Lucius.
That did not stop him from getting into a brief fistocuffs with the aristocrat in the summer of 1992. During the commotion the Horcrux was slipped to the only Weasley daughter. Even knowing what her father said about things that could think for itself, she still felt compelled to write in the strange diary. Throughout the year as she continued to write and pour her soul and life energy into the Horcrux. Feeding the teenaged Tom all he needed about what was going on in the present and how much had changed or stayed the same while he was confined to the depths of the diary.
While the foolish niave girl was possessed by Tom, the basalisk was set loose again. Many students were petrified and a few were even killed. Whispers of doubts began to float around and parents were beginning to fear for their children. Hogwarts had been deemed the safest place in the UK for quite some time up until the attack in 1940s when a girl was killed in the bathroom. It seemed history was repeating itself. This time with deadlier consequences and more victims.
Tom revelled in the news that Dumbledore was beginning to lose that pedestal people put him on. There were cries of outrage and broken trusts at the deaths. Parents wanted to pull their children out. If they weren't safe at Hogwarts then it wasn't like they were in any greater danger being at home under supervision. The Ministry too began to have doubts and began listening.more to certain whispers against the old man. Taking Ginny's body to the Chamber of Secrets Tom waited until the last of her essence faded and her body was cold. Her life force allowed his soul to be freed from the diary, giving him a solid body once again. Ginny Weasley's body would never be recovered. |

| Armed with a stolen wand and a basalisk, Tom knew he still needed to bide his time a little. Find out what had gone wrong with his plans that his followers would think him dead. The fact that he was sixteen would both be a help as well as a hindrance. It was while he was searching for answers, knowing he would not have limited himself to just one Horcrux. He'd intended to make seven. Seven was a magical number. He found the shade of what he'd become. A struggle had ensued when he absorbed it. The fragment wanted the body for himself while Tom wanted the knowledge the fragment possessed. Being the one with a larger soul, Tom won the battle receiving what he wanted.
Going where he hid the Peverell ring, Tom donned it deciding that he would use his ancestor's surname. With it he could lay claim to a seat in the Wizengamont. As a Peverell descendant it was his right. He could always say he had been in another country until this point. Being charismatic, intelligent, and a bit versed in the political field (Slytherin House was a sea of ever shifting polotics and political power), people would naturally be inclined to believe him. It was how he'd gotten most of the Hogwarts staff and students to see him. He'd become very adapt at acting, knowing what the other person wanted.
Waiting a year to gain his majority was put to use plotting and planning. Setting the foundations for his return, creating connections, becoming up to date on everything. A ritual was used to absorb the soul fragment in the ring so Tom was back to having a bit more than 3/4ths of his soul. Having the majority of it, he deemed it satisfactory. There wasn't a chance that he would not keep at least one Horcrux as a failsafe. If he'd not done it, he would still be possessing snakes or dead.
Wanting to be sure that his Horcrux were safe Tom went over where they were. He had made five before his downfall at the Potters. The diadem was safely locked in Hogwarts where no one would find it. The ring he now wore was useless except as proof of his lineage. The locket he had found had been ferreted away by the Black brat. The cup was in Lestrange's vault, and his diary had obviously been carelessly discarded. The Malfoy patriarch had paid for allowing it to slip through his fingers by supplying his house elf when he'd looked for the locket.
All of his Death Eaters became aware of his return with the visual proof upon their arms. In Azkaban there was much laughing, howling, and shouting. The Dementers had been called to subdue and kiss some of the inmates. Across Europe some people were panicking and fleeing. Others prepared for the inevitable, some celebrated, some had only dread in their hearts. In Hogwarts the Potions Professor had gone to the Headmaster who became grave. The Dark Lord was back, but the wizarding world had no savior to counter him with. The Longbottom heir was given additional protection as a precaution. |

| Working his way up the political ladder, the young lord of the Peverell was soon in charge of the running of the wizarding world even if no one realized it. He hinted and bribed whom he needed to levy certain bills and pass motions that might have been overlooked. With his influence he was able to wave other bills and laws that he did not wish to pass. The ones that were the most obvious and took immediate action was the ones regarding the young. Those children from muggle based families, or those placed with the muggles. While not telling the world whom he really was, Peverell let a few stories of his childhood out as proof and incentive to why he was doing what he was doing. Why he opened up the Peverell Orphanage for Magical Children. Along with supplying funds for the creation of Merlin's Primary Academie of Magic.
As soon as a child showed any type of accidental magic they were listed in a book in that countries or district's census book. Children, especially those in a muggle surrounding should have been more carefully monitored and the parents or guardians informed instead of leaving everything to be explained upon their eligibility for Hogwarts or other magical schools. With Peverell's laws, bills, and amendments, they were. If a place was deemed unacceptable, the child was removed and placed in the magical orphanage where they could be better cared for. The people with whom the child had been staying would have their memories altered and/or dealt with depending on the treatment of the magical child. Punishments were severely dealt with.
Tom having traveled the world and gaining his sanity and cunning back had come to realize how small the magical community was. Even if he had gathered all those whom wanted to erase the muggles from the world, they would not be able to eliminate them all. Not with people like Dumbledore backing them. He would bide his time while the muggles destroyed themselves. With technology always evolving, humanities innate fear of all that is different or their want to dissect everything they don't know to get answers, Tom voted and put in motion for the magical world to segregate themselves from the muggles. To truly hide themselves and for them to not interact with the muggleworld except to retrieve the children. Those that have graduated from Hogwarts or magical schools would have to go into a magical career. If they wished to leave the magical world and live among the muggles then they would be allowed to...As Muggles. They would have their wands broken, their magic bound, and their memories altered and erased.

| While the majority of the wizarding world believed that the new laws were a GOOD thing, there were those that doubted it. Dumbledore having lived through a couple of regimes and seeing how dictatorship starts, tried to argue against the new laws. He was thwarted at each turn. While Peverell voted for segregation, Dumbledore insisted they must work with the muggles. While his words and influence might have worked in the past, they didn't hold much water. For years the old warlock's reputation had continually declined while Lord Peverell's kept rising higher.
The continual butting of heads led to Dumbledore being sacked from Hogwarts while Minerva McGonagall briefly took over. Continual support of the dethroned 'leader of the light', had the Scotswoman sacked and tossed in Nurmengard. Dumbledore losing all of his titles had once again battled with Lord Peverell who overpowered and injured his attacker. Before Dumbledore could be taken away to die in Nurmengard, Peverell had whispered Dumbledore and Grindelwald's saying to the man. "It's for the greater good."
To maintain order, those that were known associates and supoorters of Albus Dumbledore were arrested and incarcerated in Nurmengard. Most of the professors at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were taken away. New professors were put in placed after screening to be sure they weren't part of Dumbledore's lot. Families such as the Weasleys were under scrutiny. Some of the family such as Bill whom worked for Gringotts had to stay out of the whole thing. Gringotts was impartial and if Bill wanted to keep his job he would as well. Percy had already begun distancing himself from his family by aligning himself with the Ministry.
