Personality: Voldemort is a sadist who takes pleasure in inflicting pain be it physical or psychological. Devoid of empathy of any kind. As a child and well into adulthood before the madness too hold he was very charismatic and charming person. Very good at reading people. An impeccable actor and liar who knew how to say the right thing and behave to get what he wanted. Lost more and more of his humanity to where he became a raging psychopath.

-History-
Family: Merope Gaunt's family were descended from Purebloods and could trace their line all the way back to Salazar Slytherin himself. Because of being a direct descendant, they could speak Parseltongue, the language of the snakes. A trait which was passed down to Merope's son, Tom. Because of all the inbreeding, Merope's magical level was too low for an acceptance letter from Hogwarts or any other magical schools. Because of this, she was treated even more poorly than she had been by both her father and brother. As an act of escapism she fantasized about the rich handsome boy on the hill. Realizing that he wouldn't look twice at her (her looks left much to be desired), nor that her father or brother would approve, Merope slipped Tom Riddle Jr a love potion. And they were wed. After about a year however, she the guilt and doubt that had been building for a year consumed Merope and she abruptly stopped the potion.

Thomas Riddle Jr was the only child of Thomas and Mary Riddle who as far back as they knew weren't magic of any kind. They were however wealthy and owned land which had been passed down through the family. Tom Jr had never wanted for anything. Because of his looks he didn't have to try very hard to win any woman. Unfortunately for him, he had caught the attentions of the ugly girl down the hill in the shack with the crazy man and boy who found it quite fun to torture and bully the townspeople no matter the age. When he unknowingly consumed love potion, he believed himself infatuated with the girl and ran away with her. They lived that way for a year before he came out of the fog terrified of the woman and what she had done. He knew she had tried to trap him by telling him that she was carrying his child. Fleeing to his parents house, he never spoke a word for fear that his parents would send him to the asylum. He believed falsely, that without his money, she would die.

Merope did die, but not until she gave birth to their son at the end of December in 1926. She only had enough strength to give her son a name. 88 years prior Oliver Twist was published and had a beginning much like the newborn Tom Marvolo Riddle. Just as in the story, he grew up in an orphanage, but unlike the story it was not a workhouse. The carers of the orphanages had too many mouths to feed and didn't particularly care for the children only making sure they were fed and clothed. They were in a depression economically from the fall out of WWI. The poor were numerous and so the orphanages didn't get much and had to be satisfied with what the did get provided with. Children as soon as they were of an age to work usually did so in order to escape the dreary place and earn money in order to try and eat better.

Personal:
Having grown up between the two World Wars, Tom had always had an innate desire for more. More control over his life; food, clothing, privacy, monetary possessions, his decision of what he did and when. Growing up with barely anything he'd learned life's lesson early that you had to take what you wanted. So he did. He grew up and was patient as he strove for what he wanted. His goals had started loftily enough wanting to change the laws and rules about magical children and people. Believing that those with magic shouldn't be involved with those who did not. Believing that he would never have enough time to change the world and having come across the information of horcruxes during school and having split his soul twice before he left Hogwarts in order to be alive to achieve his ambition.

As he started splitting his soul it began to wear on his sanity and ideas started to twist and bend. Seeking out the other items of the founders in order to find the missing locket of Slytherin which was his by right, along with other items of the Hogwarts Founders had him employed at Borgin and Burkes after he left school. During that time he came across the locket as well as Helga Hufflepuff's descendant and killed her for the cup and a tramp which became his third Horcrux and fourth Horcrux. Going underground for awhile to amass his followers and incite them, he studied to find Ravenclaw's diadem and decided to go to Hogwarts. He was turned down the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts denying Tom his ability to reach and corrupt the students. Cursing the position he was turned down, he hid the diadem in the Room of Requirement before he left. He began a war to try and force them to see that the laws needed to be changed and that his way was the correct road for the wizarding world's future.

Dumbledore as always defied him and in order to try and overcome his fear and inferiority about the older wizard, Tom began to go through rituals to make him better, stronger, etc which warped him even more. Then, he heard a prophecy that threatened everything. Both Potter and Longbottom had continued to plague him with their little Order, Tom logically chose the Potters. Not only because of the similarity to himself of being born as a Halfblood, but also because of the wording of the prophecy. It had stated as the seventh month dies, meaning the very last day. Longbottom had been born a day before that so it had to mean the Potter brat. That led to his downfall and his 'death'. Yet, because of the Horcrux he had in play and the rituals he'd endured, his soul was able to cheat death and flee his ruined body.
